Turn daily living into a learning activity. By introducing real life lessons, your child will learn more than just some typical curriculum. You can also teach them as they go through their own daily duties. Have them help you with cooking to teach measuring and conversion skills. Children learn these things easily at young ages, and you will be glad.
While you might not want to allow your children to join public school, they still need social interaction. Schedule pay dates with other family members or neighbors. Go to the local park and allow your child to interact with other kids. Sign them up for community teams and hobby clubs.
Figure out the best area in your home to conduct your homeschooling before the school year starts so you can thoughtfully set it up. It needs to be an area in which the children do not feel as though they are distracted from outside influences. You need to have enough space for a lot of action and activity. This environment needs to be safe and easy to monitor.
Don’t forget using art in lesson plans, regardless of whether the subject is art or not. Let children draw what they have learned, or even paste together a mosaic. You can even incorporate singing, acting, or sculpting. The most effective learning takes place through immersion, so any activities you can build into lesson plans only product better results.
Understand your state’s homeschooling laws and procedures. Several states require you to register as a type of private school, while other states let you give kids standardized tests at specific grade levels. Talk to your school district as well to ensure they know you’re homeschooling now.
Learn when to give in. When you’re teaching your child and it’s not working, there is a time to give in. Find a new and effective way of presenting that particular subject. There are a lot of outside resources that can assist you, such as computer tutors or educational movies. Pushing your child to learn in a way that isn’t working for them will leave you both frustrated.
Learning life application is as important as your child’s academic studies. This means you should learn creative ways to include various life skills teaching into your academic studies, too. Often, people take life simple life skills for granted. Teach both at the same time. Why not take them grocery shopping so they can learn about inflation and taxes?
Do you want to homeschool more than a couple kids? If so, you must first determine whether or not you are willing and able to take on the additional discipline required of a teacher AND a parent. By having rules, you will be able to teach without interruptions. Making sure your children understand your rules of discipline will help them become successful in learning.
Give your child opportunities to interact with other kids. A regular classroom is absent, so you must have a plan. Find some homeschooling parents in your area and plan a field trip together. Sign your children up for sports groups within the community. The Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts offer great ways for kids to socialize.
Allow your children to influence your lessons. Allow them to use their imagination a bit and be open with you about what their interests are. They will have a more participatory experience of permitted to help determine the course of their studies. The ideas they come up with can be astounding.
